Open Day and Newark in Bloom Launch

Open Day

Our open day was a great success. We timed it to coincide with the launch of Newark in Bloom.

The Town Mayor and Mayoress joined the Chairman of Newark in Bloom at Newark Castle to plant sunflower seeds in the parterre and then walked across to The Wharf and looked at all the improvements at the Castle Barge and Pizza Express. Jenni from Andy Olive Photography has worked really hard to get all the businesses and residents of the small area involved to make it a pleasant place to go and sit and enjoy the river.

Then they came up to us at Eton Avenue for coffee and homemade cake.

Kev, Mayoress Mrs Penelope Richardson, Mayor Cllr Brian Richardson, George Wilkinson Chairman Newark in Bloom, Gillie Wilkinson Eton Avenue Growers.

All Hands on Deck

All hands on deck

We’ve been having a big tidy up and sort out getting ready for our open day. Last week we had Education youth Services from Nottingham and Lincoln for two whole days and they were joined by the Newark group on Wednesday afternoon.

Stephen (one of our regular volunteers) has a bit of help from “the girls”

Many hands make light work!

The gang (and chooks) remove twitch after Gavin has rotovated

New Shed

Pete is in his element, another shed to put up 🙂 After taking time to prepare the ground, levelling the area and making the solid base, the shed was up in a blink of an eye ! Made easier by having the help of Steve and Gavin. Not to mention the chucks who helped with insect removal some of which were Jurassic in proportion! The ladies get a safe distance ( far end of allotment) as to not hamper developments.

After finishing the weeding in the tunnel and the frame was built, Dave and Steve covered it all in chippings We had a bit of help from the chucks too 🙂 Pete will cover the frame with netting and then the sweet- peas can be planted.
The E.y.s group planted two rows of broad beans on Wednesday and also filled the spare bath with earth. They then planted some flower bulbs.
